Broken Arrow History  

Emigrating to Oklahoma from Georgia in 1828, the first group of Creek Indians settled along the Arkansas, Verdigris and Grand Rivers, a few miles north of present Muskogee, Oklahoma. Broken Arrow takes its name from a community in the tribe?s homelands in Georgia. Traditionally, when a community became too big to gather around one campfire, the people divided and a new town would be established. When it came time to find a new town site, a group of Creeks decided on an area they had visited while gathering materials for making arrows. Since they had broken branches from the trees instead of cutting them to make their arrows, they named their new camp ?Thlikachka ? or ?Broken Arrow.?

Founded in 1975 with the purpose of researching and writing a scholarly history of the City of Broken Arrow and its vicinity. Also to serve as a history museum and to house a collection of historic objects the Historical Society has collected a wonderful treasure of early Broken Arrow and the surrounding area.


"Holiday Lights in Central Park" 1500 S. Main Broken Arrow is lighting up for the Holidays throughout Central Park. Watch for Santa's Elves playing a game of softball on the BAGSL diamonds while Santa takes some time out to do some fishing in the creek. To keep up with the rapidly growing community, the Tulsa City-County Library System built the W. Broadway library in 1985. The building features 11,500 sq. ft with a shelving capacity for 40,000 books, a community meeting room that seats 100, separate children's, young adult and adult areas.

The South Broken Arrow Library opened in 1994 and offers 6,100 sq ft with a shelving capacity for 27,000 books, a community meeting room that seats 75, separate children's and adult areas.
